If I wanted to be a spin-doctor I would have gone to school to be a DJ

It saddens me to know that people still view PR professionals as “spin doctors”. Mind you, I realize that there are still PR professionals that abuse their power. However, when I enter the working world in six months I would like to be recognized for my honest work efforts.

I’ve grasped the fact that I will have to work twice as hard to prove myself in my career, but I have never given less than 100% on anything I have done for an employer. It only takes one big mistake to ruin your career in Public Relations too (I don’t plan on having that happen by the way).

My efforts will always be indirectly rewarding by the stakeholders I affect, but I hope it doesn’t take me messing up before my future boss feels the need to give me some feedback. I can only hope I find a company that values PR for all its worth. We may not be an officially credited profession, but there are organizations like IABC and the PRSC that are there to assist us.

I feel certain in my choice to pursue PR as my career. I just hope that one day public relations professionals will have a stereotype for being moral, and not for being producers of propaganda.
